    Hey Everyone

    Hey Everyone,

Just joined and i'm sure i'll be using a lot of the advice here as i embark on my very first build, with the SV-1. Super excited about it (even though its still in WA...yet to make it to VIC).

I'm also planing on stripping down my Torch Vintage Series (first ever guitar many years ago) and fixing the electrics as well as staining rather than repaint to get that natural wood finish.

No real experience in these things so excited to learn new things.

Welcome aboard. I redid all of the hardware and electrics in my first guitar not long ago- definitely worthwhile. I left the finish alone though as it helps keep some of this history of the guitar intact - genuine relic

    Thanks Sonic Mountain.

I thought about just doing the electronics but keen to have a guitar with a pure wood finish...famous last words maybe? :-)

One thing to be aware of with solid colour guitars is that they are often solid colour for a reason, typically ugly grain in good timber.

Welcome to the magnificent illness that is building guitars

Welcome! I enjoy my SV1 kit I did a couple of years ago, nice guitars.

Yeah, hoping the wood underneath is ok...but if not will change the colour anyway and maybe think of a swirl finish. Either way hoping that i can use this is a learning lessons for the sv-1.

Andyxlh, would be keen to understand the process you went through. Given i'm a real noob for builds, look for an easy way to start while getting a pretty good finish.

Hoping to do pure white, and wondering if i can just use spray cans? Seen a few do it on youtube and seems to come out ok for a first build...

There's lots of different paints you can use, auto finish and so on for solid colours. I have recently discovered Dunlop duramax from the Big Green Shed, it really stinks when it goes off (recently got into trouble with the Boss when the stink got into the house through the garage door), but they give a great shiny finish and are hard.
You will need a decent compatable primer filler to get a pro smooth finish with fine sanding, and a clear will add depth.
    Duramax has both of these.
The link to the build thread for my SV1 is in my signature below, I did it in black wood stain (basically solid black) with a poly clear.
Good luck with the build. Great guitar, the only weak link has been the locking nut which I have stripped, replace it with a steel one not alloy and add the string retainer bar on the headstock.

Thanks Andyxlh, i'll check out your build thread. I just got my kit and first impressions are awesome. To be honest i didn't expect kits to be this good, so very stoked! Did a kit check to make sure i had everything and will do a mock build tonight. Then i can start planning out the sanding of the body first and go from there.
