    Wiring fun.

About to start this for the third time. First time I had like a Jazz Bass cut off on full volume...with all knobs rolled on....nothing...roll both volumes back a smidge and nice sound. Thought that was suss.

Second Time...I get nothing at all.....hmmmm.

I have used leads from capacitors to make some extensions for the pins on the push pull pots....I have then soldered wires to these and dropped heatshrink over the whole thing....reckon I have a bad joint in there.

I think I will take the whole assembly out of the cavity...push into the cardboard again...extend all the wires and make the whole thing external to the body and keep checking until I get it all to work.

It’s definitely best to wire it outside the body, test it, then install. I normally use clip leads to link the pickups to the circuit, where possible, until I’m certain it all works before finalising the connections.

My first guess would be check the J volume push/pull connections, as I can’t really see enough in the above photo to diagnose it. If you can’t solve it post some clearer close-up photos and the collective may spot something amiss.

And, as always, just make sure nothing on the pot lugs etc is shorting against the copper shielding, particularly on the underside.

I took the whole wiring harness out of the body....complete....and plugged in....guess what we have sound.

I then unsoldered and remade the whole harness again.

This time I put a nut on the shaft of each pot under the body...keeping the pot and lugs just that little bit away from the copper. We have sound.

Weirdy...back to how I was the first time.....if both pots are on full...volume pots....I get a distinct drop off of volume....roll either volume pot back a little and I get a nice sound. All the up and down positions work as you listed...thank you.

I just have to remember to roll one volume off a little. Love the sounds and options...thanks again Weirdy.

Waz....those little nylon washers...where did you get them....the big green shed???...in nuts and bolts or some other dodgie section they have......I get my sanding pads in the tool shop...not with sandpaper in painting department????

Straplocks arriving in the mail today....allegedly....and fix my BEE....and a quick polish again....and the Low Bee will be done.

Hi Ozzie, yeah, big green shed for those nylon washers. They also have black softer rubber ones too and both are usually located near each other in the fasteners aisle.

Drop off in volume when both on 10 is normal, same as on J Bass. Only way around drop in volume when both on is to install a 3 way switch as that solved the problem on my EX5.

Remember that the J pup will be in phase with one of the MM coils and out of phase with the other, so when the OOP coil is in the mix there will be some cancellation of certain frequencies. Tweaking one of the volumes will help to reduce that effect.

Out of interest, set both volumes on max, J push/pull down, and try the MM split to one coil and then the other and see if there is a greater change in the volume with one specific coil combined with the J.

Weirdy....with the pots both down....or either one up (MM pots) the sound is very similar. But with both UP the sound is stronger.

In any case...no sound is as loud as when I roll the MM or J Bass volume pot off a little.

If I pull the J Bass volume pot up...the volume lifts markedly....this only happens if both MM pots are down....it makes little if any difference if one or both are up.

I am really loving all the options...five strings...and all these sounds....the MM pickup has such grunt especially on the Low B.
