Classic guitars modded beyond all recognition

While watching a Red Fang video, I noticed the guitarist playing something that looked like a cross between an SG and a Les Paul:

Imagine my confusion when the camera panned back to reveal a Fender head stock!!

It turns out this is a seriously hacked up/modded 64 Fender Mustang. I never would have guessed that one.

    Is this a common thing?
    Why would anyone do this?
Do you guys have other examples of folks rendering classic guitars unrecognisable?

A few examples spring to mind. Not 100% unrecognisable, but Mike Bloomfield's 63 Tele had a bit of work done to it by a later left handed owner.

And that's a pretty iconic guitar right there.

And how about Eddie Van Halen's Ibanez Destroyer

Story goes he did most of the woodwork with a chainsaw....

Dunno if this counts- are we looking for good or bad? That red fang one is kinda cool IMO.

Here's a few I googled while bored at work.

    Build 1 - Shoegazer MK1 JMA-1
    Build 2 - The Relliecaster TL-1
Build 3 - The Black Cherry SG AG-1
    Build 4 - The Sonicaster TL-1ish
    Build 5 - The Steampunker Bass YB-4
    Build 6 - The Howling Gowing ST-1

My opinion too. Half the reason I tried so hard to ID it was because deep down, part of me wanted to get one and was wondering if there was a baritone version.
