Thread: What have I done?!

    What have I done?!

Hello. I've just pulled the trigger on a PB-4 kit, with a few personal touches (fretless, 30" scale). I'm expecting delivery in August, which is fine with me because it'll give me more time to try and work out what to do with a box full of guitar parts!

I'm not much of a musician but compared to my luthiering skills, I'm a genius so you can look forward to some very stupid questions on the forum in coming months - "What end of a screwdriver do you use?"

I've been mulling this over for some time. I know I'm preaching to the choir but there is something very enticing about building a guitar. I'm sure its insights will help me with my knowledge of my instruments and my music. So, even if it turns out to be a noble failure, I'm sure it will be useful. Hopefully, this will be the start of something grand and my "handmade" instruments will take their rightful place in the practice performance space.

    Thanks in advance.

Welcome aboard Knunney! Don't worry, most of us started out in the same frame of mind. Post your questions in a build diary, use as many happy snaps as you can to illustrate any issues or uncertainties you have and the rescue team will parachute in with tips, advice, methodology and a lot of very wry humor. ENJOY!

Great kit to start with - my first as well (though of the fretted kind). Don't be afraid to ask dumb questions - the best way to learn is from other's mistakes - not your own!

Welcome Knunney. Pretty simple kit as a 1st choice to build. Which fretboard did you choose, maple or the new fake rosewood? Don't know much about the new engineered dark fretboards but maple holds up really well for non fretted.

Thank you for your welcomes, FrankenWashie, Sonic Mountain, Brendan, Fretworn and wazkelly.
I haven't specified a fretboard other than its scale and its being fretless so I guess it will be the engineered rosewood listed in the kit. To be honest, I'm as green with fretless as I am with kit-building so I don't have particularly high expectations. I have wanted a fretless for a while - a DIY fretless ticks two boxes and had a better chance of passing the Finance Committee. Perhaps, on my next build, I'll be more circumspect. Thanks again.

Fretless are a lot of fun and being short scale may make it a little bit easier to hit the right notes given there probably won't be any fret lines to act as a guide.
