    Less amber hue from Tru-oil

    Hey guys,

I've been reading that when finishing with TO, using a thinner initial coat will give less of an amber hue, as opposed to a liberal initial coat.

I'm probably going to go with a clear birchwood casey sealer filler. Has anyone used this under tru oil? Has anyone perhaps used tru oil both with and without the sealer filler underneath?

The sealer filler was originally suggested to me by Simon. It seems like a good option provided that I have adequate ventillation.

    Cheers,

    Derek.

I'm not sure how that will work, as the amber colour is a basic component of Tru-Oil. So unless you only add a couple of very thin coats of Tru-Oil, then you are always going to get an amber tint to things. The more coats, the more amber it will get. If you don't want that, then I'd go for a clear lacquer spray or wipe-on poly.

    Hi Derek,

Check out my MMB-4 which is build 6 in my signature for an all nude basswood body and maple neck done with about 30 + coats on the body and about 15-20 on the neck.

Up to around 8 - 10 coats and it may still look fairly light but as you add more coats to get more shine and depth it naturally starts to darken as the layers build up.

Hopes this helps and as Simon said if you want a more Albino look maybe try a pure clear product such as acrylic or poly.

    Cheers, Waz

For me, the trick to getting Tru-Oil to go on clears is to use Cabot's Cabothane Clear instead.

The overwhelming response seems to be just that. Less amber hue? Don't use it at all. Lol.

I don't mind some amber hue. It'll either be less coats or just use something else.
