Back in the mid seventies, when I was just a teenager,we went to see Kiss in concert at the Sydney Showgrounds, and I just wanted a Gean Simmons axe bass. Anyway, I had on old bass laying around and I was working in a timber yard at the time and I just got strait into building it as a mock up for a fancy dress at the local Rollerena skate rink.
As bad as I looked I got first place.
So,forty years later, after building a couple of Pitbulls, I decided to get it back out and have a go at doing it right for a bit of fun.
Originally it was painted with some rattle cans and having no experience at the time painting,it was pretty bad. All I had left was the body as the neck was badly split and all the hardware was really rusty. I bought a second hand “Musicman” bass from the junk shop for 40 bucks, as it had a cracked neck at the joint I glued and clamped ,good as new. I am reusing all the hardware as well ,so out comes the router for the larger pick-up. The doner guitar was green and with that crappy headstock shape it had to change, it looked like “Gumbie’s” head. It’s got a real nice grainpattern on the fret board.
Some problems repainting the body, as I am using Dulux “Duramax” ,which seems to turn the gum on the back of the masking tape into super glue, but I’m getting there.
