Just thought I would put up a pick of the state of Frankenbass. It was a jazz-style bass until recently, but with DiMarzio J's rather than the stock SX single coils. They are OK. And Frank, which has been mostly something for me to experiment on and to take to outdoor gigs where it might rain, has been OK too.
Over the course of my two year ESB-4 build, I tried all of the fret dressing, set-up and improvement tricks on Frank first...and wouldn't you know it, Frank now plays great. So, I wanted him to sound great too... I love the Jazz neck, but really wanted more of a P sound...
My wife got me some EMG-GZR PJ pickups for Christmas. I got a pickguard from Warmoth. Buyer beware! It did not fit a standard Fender control plate, and their reputation for crappy customer service is totally justified. I was able to modify it with careful filing and sanding though... A little routing under the pickguard...and voila!
Total mods to date:
DB made bone nut
EMG GZR P and J pickups, wiring, pots and jack (super easy to install)
New control plate (Kmise--actually better than the Fender and same size, but with Asian holds that the EMG pots use)
Warmoth pickguard (modified...buyer beware)
Schaller straplocks
Raytheon knobs
Plays and sounds great after setup with what I learned here. Thanks dudes!
