    Sonics 4th Build - YB-4 - The Steampunker Bass

Yeah yeah - I've got enough guitars on the go surely...nope!

My wife has been threatening to learn bass for a while now, so of course what she really needs is her own custom instrument. She has been really interested in the steam punk style for a while, so I though that might be a good place to start. It also gives me a chance to go all out on a custom finish. Something a little like this.

So I bought one of the cheaper kits on the site as I plan to hack up the body a fair bit.

Like the SG - more to come when I get a few minutes.

Steampunk is becoming quite the thing, its an aesthetic I've used in quite a lot of renders too, I like it!. The big danger is always "sticking some gears on it and calling it steampunk". Steampunk is not what happens when Goths discover brown! The examples you have there are great inspiration, I especially like the top one,it stays in theme and stays classy, the last one is teetering on the edge of overkill. I've moved on to diesel punk and have a tele planned for sometime next year, still collecting all the do-dads.

Yeah, with steam punk you really have to think Victorian first and foremost, unnecessary pipes and cogs second.

Yeah the top one is my favourite as well. Like wise I've been collecting little bits and pieces to embellish it with. It has definitely hit the main stream. I did an animated short in 2007 that was very steam punky. We did this in two weeks in between normal work. Looking back I wish that I'd done some better drawings, but he overall atmosphere is pretty cool.

Yeah I have a real problem with non-functional components just to add to the look. I am thinking about including a clock with"Time to practice" at every hour mark....

Yeah its was good fun. Doing it quick and nasty captured something you don't get when its meticulously planned.

Any suggestions for a funkier bridge? And tuners? I am half toying with the idea of using souvenir spoons for tuning pegs.....

Check out the cigar box guitar community - they've used all manner of improvised things on their instruments, including some antique drawer handles to attach the strings to etc.
