Sonics 3rd Build - The Young Blood SG

The things that rock up when you are too busy to deal with them.....

This whole guitar building thing is starting to snowball a bit. Now my youngest has started to show an interest in learning guitar and he has been diligently working away at some tunes on what is referred to as the 'hippy guitar', a 3/4 acoustic that kicks around our house, that was painted for a fancy dress party a couple of years ago. Its nice and easy to play and sounds pretty nice, so perfect for learning the basics on.

This of course is a good excuse for me to build him a 'real' guitar. He has recently started take-in an interest in music in general and a few months ago was excited to show us a new band he had discovered - a small, little known Australian group called ACDC. Suffice to say he has started his education in rock. We even went and caught the Acca Dacca tribute show for his birthday this year. A pale comparison to the real thing, but a good amount of loud for a ten year old.

So this brings me to my 3rd PBG build - The Young Blood SG. Its going to be a pretty straight down the line tribute to Angus Youngs guitars - so cherry red wood finish, Classic.

Some more pics and concept work to come once I get a few minutes to scratch myself - but here it is straight out of the box.

Yep, first foray into set neck - which is the other reason I decided to do one of these - time for something new.

Are you going to get the young fella to help? Might even stir him a bit for career options later on...

Yeah he'll be involved when the mood takes him. His older sister tends to be keener on the manual arts. I'm happy if he keeps picking a guitar up everyday and practising.

It's been a busy end of year period so pretty quiet on the building front.

I got a bit of time and motivation today to do some work on this one. I shaped the headstock, unashamedly Hagstrom inspired. And then spent a bunch of time sanding. As this will be a natural stained finish I'm paying more attention to the wood finishing.

I got some very bright uv stabilised red ink to do the stain with. I am thinking I might need to do a black stain first and then the red on top of that to get the look I want. Fair bit more sanding to do yet so I'll keep experimenting. I'm planning on setting the neck before finishing to get a nice continuous flow. Should be interesting after the bolt on builds, but I think I can manage it.

    Rough cut with the jigsaw

Refined with some 120 grit in the power sander, will finish it off by hand.
