So its a nitro based stain clear base 'Craftsman Pigment Stain' to which I added approx 1/2 blue and 1/2 green solvent based 'Ultratint'
bought a 4 ltr and mixed up approx 500ml which was way too much.

Came up a little darker than I was aiming for, but still pretty happy sa far....

the Ultratint is what we use at work to tint 2 pack poly's and epoxy.

Going to attempt a black burst with some more stain and if all fails give it the Red Door treatment - i.e 'Paint it Black'

    Absolutely gorgeous.

The coopers gets the seal of approval as well - but you need to have a tidy up and put some pics in the sheds thread.

    knowledge fail / lesson

    blotchy stain when dry

nitro based stain isn't re-coatable (as i've learned today) . so hand rubbing a burst is out, the stain just re-wets itself and is difficult to spread evenly by hand. I tried to iron out the finish a few times which resulted in buildup on the edges. photos look bad

Black burst intentions mean some lovely grain will be hidden.

Looks pretty good still to me?

One of the reason I went back to black on my sg is I couldn't get the red stain to look even enough for my liking. But I think that may be just the way it is with theses bodies assembled from multiple pieces. Once you get a good clear over them its not really noticeable.

Cheers Sonic, I only posted the few good pics of edges. Think your right when clear goes on will be fine. Still hoping I can fluke a good burst.
It's funny how when you sand / colour/ build these projects you often know of all the imperfections which dont really matter, yet they still manage to bug you a bit.

Oh yeah, its the same with cars. You can patch stuff up. But you know it's there.

I think you will be pleasantly surprised at what some clear coats will do for it - regardless of what system you use.
