How would I go about obtaining this type of raised grain on my next project and what wood would best facilitate this?

looking to do a matte black finish.

That's ash for a start. To get that effect, the wood is gone over quite enthusiastically with a stiff wire brush before sanding.

There's a high-end Sydney furniture maker called Mark Tuckey who is known for that effect and I've heard he sandblasts the timber, but Pabs' way is much more accessible!

Hey Golfnerd, as Pabs and Chuck have said, ask around friends or local businesses if they have a sandblaster, it will give you a more raised grain, otherwise elbow grease and a wire brush !
