Hi Uppo, welcome to the site. Dont worry about not knowing anything about guitar building, that title applied to most everyone on this site at one time or other. Anything you need to know can be answered on this forum, the vast amount of knowledge here is breathtaking.
Take each stage one at a time, and dont forget to read the articles on this forum about what to do first when you receive your kit...

As for a colour its your choice, red goes with a lot of colours, google it.
Red and...black, white, red, purple..the list is endless.
As for the copper shielding that is essential for stopping feedback from the electrical wiring and pickups. You usually insulate the cavities and back of the pickguard if it isnt already done. Cheers, happy building..

Shielding the cavities is advised, even though most commercial instruments don't come with any shielding. You've got one true humbucker (the Musicman type pickup) and one semi-humbucker on the bass (the P-bass type pickup), and these are far less liable to pick up noise than the pure single coils of a J-bass style pickup. But for a few dollars more, it really is worth shielding the cavities to cut any noise pickup to a minimum.

Thanks Simon. Good to hear that we are on the right track.
Mock build complete. Everything seems to 'line up' ok. On to sanding now.
I have a few questions about wiring but will address these one sanding & finishing are about complete.
