Some tools that may interest from Aldi on 22 July 2017.

    Ladies and Lads of Luthery,

I shall be venturing to Aldi tomorrow to get this.....

    https://www.aldi.com.au/en/special-b...-multimeter-1/

Not a bad price for a multi meter with temperature probe.

I don't know if this would be much use.....but I have been considering putting a spray setup together....even just for clear coat finishes.

    https://www.aldi.com.au/en/special-b...rush-kit-150w/

Anybody with experience with spray work got any ideas. It is $99.99, comes with a moisture trap and filter, adjustable regulator 20 to 23 litres per minute.....5cc cup and 20cc pot. Max pressure of 4 bar, whatever that is in PSI.

I don't have the use for a big setup nor the justification for about $300 from super cheap or the BGS.

    Tempted.

Multi meter looks similar to ones for around same price at Jaycar or BGS.

Wonder if they will have more than just one of each catalogue special per store as is often the case so they create plenty of foot traffic?

Yeah had thought of that.....not great loss...not that keen....gonna check out the new store on Maroochydore Boulevard opposite Harvey Norman.

Do you have any suggestions about the airbrush setup?

You would need to get there very early and elbow some pensioners out of the way and then watch the stampede when the doors open.

Never used a compressor nor air brush so 'no comment' is all I have mate.

My experiences of trying to spray nitro with an airbrush were a complete failure. I got far too dry a spray - it just couldn't suck up thinned nitro from the bottle - too viscous. Note that it worked OK with other paints. It looks very much like the Aldi one - probably from the same Chinese factory.

You'd either need a gravity feed version to make it work (I wouldn't use the small open gravity feed cup they normally come with for nitro) or one with a pressurised paint container (not sure if you can actually get those with airbrushes). But IMO they really spray too small an area for clear coating. OK for sunburst edges and detailing, but to get any sort of area coverage you need to hold the airbrush too far away from the workpiece, which gives too dry a spray. You can't really spray much more than a 3cm circle with an airbrush.

For guitar work I'd be looking at a mini-spray gun and a bigger compressor if you want to do any nitro work (obviously these are also good for other paint types). But for guitars don't get a full-sized spray gun (great for painting cars but you get through paint at a huge rate of knots - plus a lot of overspray), get a mini spray gun with something like a 0.8mm2 nozzle, which should give you a spray more akin to a good rattle can. You can then also get by with a smaller, quieter compressor.

I bought my compressor based on the full-sized spray gun I bought first, then realised it was too large and got a smaller one. I could have got a compressor with a 25 litre, rather than 50 litre receiver had I bought the mini-gun first!

Just my experience, but I note Phrozin also uses mini-guns for his guitar spraying.

I reckon the airbrush would be OK with thinned acrylic for burst but i wouldn't want to try and spray a full guitar body with one.

A single piston direct drive compressor and an Ozito or similar HPLV detail spray gun would be my starting point, get a decent moisture trap/regulator from a spray shop.

Learn to drive that and it will see you home, won't have the capacity for airtools but more than enough for what you want.

I painted the car in my avatar with this basic setup but did have a quality full size HPLV gun.

Now have a much bigger compressor

    My picks would be:
Needle File set, great for shaping inlay and little touch-ups.
Hobby Tool Accessory Kit, should be fully Dremel fittable and a lot cheaper.

The Aldi airbrush looks almost identical to the Ozito kit from the BGSFOS. Oh, and BGSFOS is $2 cheaper...
