Thread: JM 1 Custom Kit

  1. #41
Quick update, I sanded back the areas of the crinkles and they have pretty much disappeared. Enough for me to continue anyway.
I have sanded back the lacquer with 2000grit until it is dull.( which is taking a looooooong time. There are a few pin pricks of shiny pits left to take out. Anyone have any more tips on sanding and buffing?

Lots of marks, dings, and the lacquer is on too thin. I’ve sanded to 2000 grit, cutting compound and polished with buffer. It’s not great but for a first time spraying a guitar, I’m happy. I did a quick mock build.

Now my question. I have a blank scratchplate. You can get templates online for the outline. I have no idea how to get where to make the pickup cavities on? How are you guys cutting? Scrollsaw? Bandsaw?

I reckon it looks pretty good as is without any scratch plate.

I agree, it looks really nice. You could do cut the scratch plate very carefully with a jigsaw using a fine blade. Just keep the cutting bit near the edge of the bench to stop it flapping around. Otherwise a little hand held craft saw and some patience would work.

I agree, I like the naked look but I'm always leaning to the stripped down ethic. Great job Freaky!

Hand crafting guitars, because Death Rays are expensive.

Tools advice (scroll saw & Router)
    Hi

Not sure if this is the correct place to post this but I was just looking for some advice for tools. I want to start shaping headatocks and scratchplates (firstly for this build) etc and maybe eventually bodies etc. I was looking around and was thinking of buying a scroll saw and a plunge router( turning it upside down and fixing it to a routing table). Does anyone think I should get anything else or have any advice?

    Thanks in advance

cutting with a fine tooth coping saw works.go very slow as the stuff is surprisingly easy to cut. Make a template from grease proof paper first(you can see through it to mark your pick up cavities), then transfer that to some stiff card board to double check every thing

I have a coping saw and a couple of blanks so I might have a go with that first, although I imagine the single coil cavities may be very difficult to get accurate!

I’m fairly new at wiring so if anyone has any advice there on wiring 2 dimarzios to one vol one tone I would be very grateful!
    Cheers

Hey Freaky, here's a wiring diagram for 2 pups, 3 way switch, one volume and one tone.
I assume you will have a 3 way switch tele style ? This is a tele wiring diagram.
If this isn't clear enough there are heaps more on google images click link below
