    entwistle dark star

hey guys im looking into setting up my entwistle pickups in series/parellel with a push/pull pots. the question is, do i need 2 push pull pots (one for each humbucker) or can i wire it up to one switch? has anyone done this before?

For series/parallel switching on humbuckers you will need one push/pull pot per pickup, as you need both poles (sets of contacts) on the pot's switch to do it. If it was just coil splitting you can do two pickups with one push/pull.

You can get 4-pole mini-switches which would allow you to do series/parallel switching on both pickups at once using a single switch, but two push/pulls are probably easier, cheaper and more versatile.

Edit: Entwistle humbucker diagram shows the series/parallel wiring with their colours.

I did the mini on-on-on switch with Darkstars on my Son's H-S-H Strat modification, one for each pickup, and the out of phase sound is not that nice and hardly worth the effort. If doing it again would just stick with push/pull as a coil split on each PUP which is what I did on Toneriders in my EX-1 and find those combinations more pleasant sounding and thus more useable.

    Cheers, Waz

ok thanks heaps Waz. ill keep that in mind. so just confirming with the tonerider pickups they can be split or parellel like the entwistles?
and i just thought of another question. i hear people talk about upgrading the wiring? do you mean better thicker wiring?or a special insulated wiring?
i know i have plenty of red and black standard power automotive wire? is that better? i know the standard wiring i got in the kit is really thin.
    what do you guys reckon?

I usually use the cloth covered stuff because you don't have to use strippers on it, just push back the cloth.

thanks dedman. the good news i got the tools for stripping the wiring and that so yeah thats no issue. but not sure does the wiring make a difference? i was going to swap the pots and i thought while im in there upgrade the wiring. i know that in moat case a better thicker wire is better jusy wasnt sure if it was the same with guitar wiring.
i also noticed that the tonerider pickups are not as hot as the entwistle ones. but everyone recommends them. i have got toneriders in my strat and love them but i also have entwistle dark stars in the flying v and love them also. its really hard to choose now these days and its only 2 brands im looking at. lol

Hi Brokin, Tonerider have more PUP's to pick from when compared to Entwistle but they do cost a little bit more. Most come with 4 wire, same as Entwistle which allows for coil splitting and other funky wiring options.

As for upgrading wiring, I think most folks are referring to electronic components such as pots & caps, switches, and also using cloth covered wire as found on the PBG store site. I have used the wire on a couple of builds and tempted to re-wire everything with it as it is such a better grade of wire and so easy to use.
