Hi mate, would love too but have discovered a couple of wiring gremlins in 2 builds and the EX-1 is one of them where the push/pull switch is playing up on the bridge PUP.

Started on sanding, neck pocket's a little floppy, not much, but it's not the tightest of fits. I'll let it sit for a while and see later.
It'll be ready to start initial spraying this weekend, assuming the weather's fine.

Have noticed the pickup surrounds get pressed in by the neck; I'll probably go chrome for those so I might have to sand the top edge down to fit.

Anyway. Excited for a new project. Hopefully this one goes well too.

Waz Kelly had the same issue and ended up just toploading them. I think there is some variance in the kits as mine was fine with the standard Gibson pup rings.

Chrome hardware on Essendon strip should look good.

Double check, maybe triple check scale length before you set the neck as there may or may not be enough room for the neck PUP ring.

Ordered the BKP Nailbombs, looking forward to those. The guys were pretty helpful, calling to complete the order when their system messed up. Cheers to everyone out there.


I've done a mock fit with the neck pickup ring and just cut the top edge and slot the neck between, it looks great. This is what I'll do with the metal ones, it'll just take a little bit longer to cut.

I'm looking forward to this weekend when I can begin spraying. Weather hold on one time!

Spray day 1, we have a black Explorer.

I'm still learning how to spray properly, so it's not looking incredible, but I'm getting better and better as the day goes long.
The plan is to get the black looking good by tomorrow night then work on the red stripe next weekend but we'll see how we go.

I'll update with pictures some other time, I don't have them right now.

Just watched a YT video on those PUP's compared to PAF's, liked the sound and noticed more depth and clarity when played clean.

Yeah, they do have a really cool sound from what I've heard. I liked them quite a lot.

Day 2:

Not happy with my work on the front. Rest of it looks fine but I didn't do well on the front.
I'm in the process of sanding it back and I'll respray the front.

Takes a while to scrape and sand this much paint but I want it to be good, not rubbish so... these are the sacrifices you make to achieve that.

Day's progress. Looks nice. Feels good.

Still some scratches in the body that I didn't sand enough and definitely should have grain filled but to be honest with you it looks more than good enough for me. Today's been a huge learning experience and I'm much better at spraying than I was.

That is what I like about building your own guitar; besides the fun it is also a great learning experience
