    newbie

hey guys. another newbie to this place. jumping in early as i wanted to hear some advice. i would like to get the flying v diy kit but never built a guitar before. i know i can assemble it but the setup and tuning is a bit concerning. is it difficult guys? hope it isn't, i really want to give it a go as it looks fun. oh yes i would like to paint it with clear spray so it looks like the finished flying v*FVG-1FN. I was told to use acrylic paint. i live in S.A. anyone know a good brand or type that would work straight in the wood finish? just want to make sure i get the right stuff so i dont stuff up the nice wood finish.

    thanks again

Hi Brokin, welcome to the forum. Do you mean a FV kit from DIY or Pitbull Guitars ?
There is enough help on the forum and guides on the setup part of the guitar that shouldn't be too difficult.
I wouldn't use acrylic paint can take weeks or months to cure. So you want to just clear over the body with no stain or paint ? The FV kits should have a flame maple veneer which would be best to stain or to clear and not use solid paint.

    hi wokkaboy,
Thanks for your reply. the kit i want to get is Pit Bull Guitars FV-1G. i would like it to look like the already finished guitar FVG-1FN, so yeah i would to clear over top of the nice wood finish with no colour change if that's possible. i always loved the nice wood finish with black scratch plate. any thing you recommend i use thay i can spray directly onto the wood once i sanded it of course.

    thanks again

    Welcome!
I've used auto acrylic clear over stain and dyes so no reason it wont go straight onto to bare wood. It will get soaked up so be prepared to do lots of coats. DON'T SAND THE VENEER! Wait until you have at least 4 to 6 coats of clear, so you are sanding the clear coats and not the super super thin veneer.
I dare say the same would go for enamel clears. Most clears will darken and slightly yellow the timber (make it look wet) look for one that says crystal clear if buying from hardware or paint shop.
Good luck, the FV is a great kit

Hi Brokin, the veneer (or sometimes called cap) is a thin (about 0.6mm thick) piece of flame maple glued to the top of the body, so it will have the flames or tiger lines on the top.
