Thanks mate, I can see what you mean from that. I like the idea of the FU-Tone thingy but I have a different idea in mind for the mounting system. A bit of a hybrid of their concept and your execution of direct mount. Will work it through with my machinist at work and see if it is feasible.

Hi Frankie, on my 2 latest P90 guitars I direct mounted the pu's to the body. Like Simon says, you just need to work out your preferred distance between strings and poles. I guess if you are a fiddler and always looking for something to adjust or someway to improve your guitar that's not the way to go.

I pretty much know what I like in a guitar setup and will probably not deviate from that too much so I thought that direct mounting might help tone a bit. But (queue Schultz's voice) "I know nothing".

Judging string height on an unfinished build is the challenge as I had to re-do mine on the EX-1 a couple of times as originally (as in that photo) they were set too low and deep into the body and when amped up were lacking the serious grunt they were supposed to have. Raising them about 5mm made the world of difference.

Thanks Robin, I have sketched out a couple of days ideas to mock up in scrap and I'll see how they go. I'm toying with just buying and trying the bar in Simon's suggestion also.

If you have some old meccano kicking around maybe that might do the job? If not, maybe a wall bracket from a hardware store could be cut down to size and would be quicker and cheaper than buying a purpose built one from the US.

You're going to need a fairly thick mounting bar so that you can get a few full screw threads in it to support the pickup without it being wobbly.

Yeah mate, I'm thinking a minimum 3-5 mm thick and probably thicker in the middle. I need to review the neck angle to set up the angle of the mount and the screw holes. It's all a bit theoretical at the moment.
