Thread: Brian's RIC builds - RC-1 & RC-4

    Brian's RIC builds - RC-1 & RC-4

Apologies for the delay in the promised build photographs. My RC-1 arrived last Monday and I have been sanding, then sanding, then going to bed and getting up before work and sanding some more. Then, when I got home I sanded. Then before I went to bed I sanded some more. When I awoke I sanded. Repeat. Ad nauseum. I got fed up sanding yesterday ( I mean for heavens sake all of those warnings on this site about more and more sanding is torture for a perfectionist first timer!!!! :-D Love it though!!! ) so today I sort of gave up the sanding and started my build in between working shifts & week-ends.

RC-4 arrives tomorrow. It will be a twin of the RC-1. (Ric Burgundyglo)

I googled stuff in regard to colours and guitar kits on the inter web and saw lots of difficult looking ways of colouring wood. I decided to turn to my paints and used some Alazarin crimson instead. Got my result within minutes. More coats to come of course to hopefully get close to RIC burgundyglo. Photo's shows two passes with my mixture of equal amounts of linseed, tru-oil, turps. two inches of oil paint squeezed out of standard tube and mixed.

Looking like a pretty even coverage. It does look a little bright to me for a burgundyglo - which seems to be more of a wine red (and the 'burgundy' in the title gives this away), so if you wanted to achieve a Ric burgundyglo finish, then I'd thing about adding a bit of blue in there to add a slight purple tinge. But there were certainly plenty of bright red Rics (Ruby), so if that's the look you are after, you've certainly achieving it.

Here's a web page with an approximation to the Ric colours on and the years they were used. http://www.the-music-connection.com/ricinfo.htm#fin

After that you're probably better off Googling for images of Rickenbackers in those colours.

Tend to like the more Ruby than Burgundy colour you have got there already. Maybe 1 or 2 more stain coats may add some depth but you also need to be mindful of what will be used for the top coat. If using Tru Oil it will add a slight light amber hue and suggest some sample test patches on a scrap bit of wood before you lock in a darker colour, just to be sure as when things get too dark it is a lot harder to lighten up.

I went down the track of attempting to darken the mixture of my initial colouring and failed miserably so I ended up doing this instead. I have learnt so much in just two weeks. I am really enjoying the experience of trying new skills which I have never tried in my life and failing miserably but getting back on the horse and trying again! Lots of thinking and trying. All great fun and it certainly beats watching TV which I don't have anyway. LOL
