    What Mahogany is that?

I have just purchased a piece of "Queensland Mahogany" for a very cheaply to build a largeish table and there will be enough left for a solid body guitar. (Talk about biting off more than one can chew). Lovely dark mahogany colour and mahogany weight.

So I did some research on the web and found it is really Eucalyptus resinfera - Queensland/Red Mahogany
Real mahogany is not a eucalyptus and there are many many types of mahogany and many many types of "mahogany" that are not mahogany.

I am not a botanist and this is all news to me. Good old web.

I found another point of interest - China imports all its timber. Does not cut it's own mahogany forests.

So this long winded into leads to the interesting question:

What kind of mahogany do we get in our Pit Bull guitars?

I would be interested to know.

If you are interested in this you may like to read the three part article below:

    PS
I have also read that it appears that as far as using Queensland mahogany for a guitar it will make a good wharf.
Well it looks good so I will let you know.

    Comments welcome

good question Greg, as there are so many types of mahogany you would need Adam to ask the factory or DB may know what type PBG use.
Would love to see some pics of the 'hog' slab you scored. What thickness is the blank ? Ideally for a guitar body 40-45mm thick is ideal.
It is important the timber isn't too green meaning it's either been kiln dried or naturally dried. Too much moisture in the timber it won't be suitable

If you saw the size of the plank in my garage you would think I can match it

Hey Adam and/or DB I fired this post up a few weeks ago and it fell off the screens pretty quick.
While you are talking timber with the Rosewood issue I wonder if you have any thought on mahogany

Hi Greg, I will ask the factory.

I do know that they get most of their timber from Indonesia, so that would be my guess.

Thanks Adam, I would be interested.

I have a Washburn "Mahogany" solid timber acoustic. Sold as "Mahogany" but is actually Indonesian plantation Sapele made in Indonesia. Comes from the same family as mahogany according to Wikipedia. Washburn didn't try to hide the fact. The guitar sounds a little dark like all solid wood guitar apparently, but has a very nice tone.

I am no expert and a bloke could finish up burying himself in timber derivations, types an tones. I found it interesting having obtained the big lump of Queensland Mahogany. But I think I will stick to building and playing. If it sounds bad, it will be me.
