    Hobastard's Project.

Not a Build as such but a Fair project for me.
I've owned and tinkered with Basses since the late seventies, installing a Schaller Pickup into my first Bass which involved a bit of chiselling in the Plywood Body. It was all hidden under the Pickguard so the stakes weren't very high.

This project involves taking a Squire P Bass and adding a J Bass Bridge Pickup and upgrading all the electrics on the way.
By far the scariest part for me will be routing the Body to take the Bridge Pickup without damaging the Gloss Black Finish. So I will be getting that done by a Friend with the relevant skills and tools.

    the Menu:
    Tonerider J Bass Bridge Pickup
    "Heavy Duty" Bridge
    CTS Pots
    Orange Drop Capacitor
    PB Tone Bleed Kits
Copper Tape lining of all cavities
    Switchcraft Jack Socket
Jack Plate to relocate the Socket from Pickguard to End of Body.
Black Pearloid Pickguard, I want this thing to be Black...... even the White Bits.....
Black Volume & Tone Knobs (I wish I could find some Smoke Black ones)
Replace all screws with Black ones.

and maybe, Black or Smoke Black Machine Heads.
Down the track, maybe also replace the Stock P Pickup with a Tonerider P Bass one.

While the Body is away I will be turning my attention to the Neck.

There are a few Frets that need setting properly and edges that need tidying up, and a general dress up all round.
I also want to darken the Fingerboard a touch. (that Black thing again)

    I think that's about all,
Hope it turns out as well as the image I have in my head for it.

It were always rainin' in Denley Moor.

Looks like a cool project, I like the idea of lots of different black textures meshing together. Are you going to try anything with the headstock?

    Yes, Ripping Yarns, Love 'em.

Maybe I will have to name this Bass, the Black Pudding.......

Unsure about the Headstock, I'm not a fan of coloured ones on a Fender style, If anything I'll put Black Hardware including the String Guide.
Wouldn't mind darkening it a little to make it look a bit older.... Suggestions on the appropriate finish appreciated.....

I used a maple stain from the unmentionable shed on the neck of the count and then gave it a light sand.

I think it came up pretty good, but love is blind

An amber tint clear lacquer will give a more aged appearance to the headstock. You can certainly get it in a nitro finish, not sure about acrylic or poly. I'm sure I've sprayed nitro over a Fender clear poly finish before with no problems, though you are always best to check first on an area that doesn't matter if it reacts e.g. the hidden area of the neck heel.

The Devil made me do it.......
I was made an offer too good to refuse on the Squier, today and my thoughts became, if I accept this offer, I can buy Kit. But I'd have to wait till May. Or I could get J Bass Kit.... Or a 5 String J Bass Kit!!!!!!.
So deal done, I headed straight to the Pitbull Shortcut on my phone and selected "Basses" it took me straight to the Beautiful Sunburst JB5. Fully built and calling my name....
I was powerless to resist and my finger was drawn towards the Buy Button....

The deal is done and I now anxiously await my new Pitbull JB5....
