Hi JB, the zero fret is supposed to make the guitar/bass easier to intonate as the height is similar to all the other frets and eliminates the strings getting 'choked' in the nut slots while bending and tuning. There are pros and cons like everything. The zero fret will eventually wear down and it's easier to replace a nut than a zero fret.
The only PBG kit that has a zero fret (I think) is the MK-2 Mosrite which I just finished but haven't had much of a chance to play it yet.
As for nuts I think it's a personal preference brass, graphite, bone etc but generally speaking I like the bone nuts and as DB says 'bone for tone' !

no worries JB, if you google 'zero fret versus nut' there are quite a few discussions and webpages about the difference and the pro's and con's of each.

I thought a zero fret was for a more consistent tone with fretted strings? It's easy enough to get a nut cut with the strings at the same height as a zero fret.
