Thread: Waz's TL-1AR Spare Parts Swampy Caster

Man sport to hear the news Waz... could you fill the spots with some dark timbermate and then lightly sand before you reapply the oil. Not sure just a thought but man the color looks so good with that wash. I was thinking about trying to roast the Ash IB-5 body on the kit that I have coming this week. Have you ever heard of someone heat treating a full. Let in the oven at about 200 degrees Fahrenheit. I know they do it to slab pieces but since the. Key will likely be 3-4 pieces glued I wander if the glue would hold up at that temp in a household oven. Maybe I am crazy but I love the color of roasted ash and the tone seems to be improved but the heat treating..

Hi Drummerdude, never heard of roasting a body before and not keen on the idea of too much heat as that could cause unwanted funky things to happen.

You could always find a bit of scrap Ash from somewhere and give it a go but tend to think glue joints holding the multiple pieces together may not like the added heat.

Adding Timbermate not really a feasible option as being patient with adding more Tru Oil has worked with filling similar dings and holes in the past. Just takes a bit more time.

Search you tube for roasted swamp ash guitar bodies. I just don't know how the glue would hold up. Maybe I will glue up some ash and give it a go. As long as the factory uses good quality glue..https://youtu.be/qYkHPYo7Yfs

Hi Drummerdude, checked that youtube video and a couple of others and if you are chasing that darker brown colour maybe worth pursuing. Personally I prefer Ash in it's natural form as that then allows for any colour sheme.

Meanwhile back in the workshop/garage 3 coats of TO have been applied several hours apart. The missus clued on late this afternoon as she recalled hearing something fall last night and was waiting for the commotion which didn't eventuate. She reckoned I should have left it as it was thus providing a distressed timber look which we guitar folk called reliced. Too late as I had already sanded back and want the front to match the back.

Anyways, the other non PBG Tele was ready to reassemble so I took the opportunity to wire up the control plate for this one whilst the soldering iron was hot. Also doing a 4 way switch mod where you have to de-solder the earth on the neck PUP and run a separate earth wire through to the controls.

Drummerdude, it's probably worth getting some wooden offcuts, gluing those together, baking them and seeing how well the glue holds out. Alternatively if you don't experiment first, you may get to glue the body pieces back together after the baking process!

I've got a 4-way switch on my Warmoth tele. The series mode is certainly a very different sound.

Hi Simon, yes it is, quite fat and chunky.

Was just playing the other Tele that I reassembled earlier tonight and flicking back and forth across all combinations having lots of fun. That axe has Wilkinson Classics in it and can't wait to hear what these Toneriders sound like in comparison.

Yeah your probably right and it would be as easy to glue back the guitar body as square pieces of wood.

Whilst the roasting looks good it does limit your colour choices for finish. Not sure I would want to re-glue a body back together as doing a set neck is about as far as I would be prepared to go.
