Thanks. All advice is gratefully received.
    That sounds a good idea.
i have just sanded back quite a lot.
Odd thing is - last time, I actually managed poly over Dingo tone and got a great headstock finish.
It wasn't so good on the back of the neck- but when i sanded it back slightly - I got the loveliest silky finish ! I guess sometimes things that shouldn't work do !

Cleaned headstock face with metho after that sand. Applied three very light mists at 10.minute spacings. Looking much better. Seems very smooth. I have also sprayed with the headstock face vertical this time. Previously the the headstock face was lying flat on a table ie I was spraying onto a horizontal surface I think vertical may help. Not sure. Also, I suspect my original idea of a light mist / light dry coat was actually an over heavy wet coat ! I will leave for 24 hours now and try another light coat tomorrow. Do not want to end ip having to sand too much because the veneer is so thin at the edges -so probably better to take it really slow.

    Phew ....
Relieved. 9 coats. Flat. Shiny. Decal buried with no lines. Just need to let cure and give a final polish. Only casuality was my Gibson style "Le Spalt Custom Built" Decal which I managed to tear when trying to place. Bugger.

Thanks Gavin. I get the decals from Rothko and Frost in UK - bit pricey, but do seem very good quality. This one seems to have disappeared into the nitro lacquer very nicely indeed. Its a shame I was so clumsy with the other one - If I had shown a little more patience it would have helped me. Once I got the metho out and cleaned the surface I was able to apply the next decal properly. Got to say, all the tips and encouragement provided by folks on the forum are really good.

21 days to cure and a damn good polish with Meguars after a quick once over with 1200 grit. Nice and shiny.
Cant wait to get the Meguars on my body.
