New to forum... and already having concerns

Hi all, George here,

I have received my ST-1M build kit with a loaded pickguard. I have found that contrary to the diagram, both wires that require soldering are connected to the volume pot. In the wiring diagram and video it shows that the earth wire should be connected to the tone pot. Will I have to re solder the wires so that they are in the correct places? Thanks

Hi and welcome. No, just carry on. The cases of the volume and the two tone pots are all connected together, so it doesn't really matter which one the earth wires run from to the output jack and the under-bridge connection.

Welcome George. As Simon said, no need for concern. The pot casings are linked so the common ground point can be on any of them, just connect up the other end of the wires as indicated and you should be good. Good luck with the build.

Thanks for the help I really appreciate it, being a 14 year old it feels like a mountainous (but fun and interesting) project. I am live in Adelaide and will update my profile info soon. Unfortunately, I cannot start the build immediately, I will have to wait for school to start again so I can use the spraying booths and various saws. Therefore I will have to start the build diary in late January just before school (need to sand before finishing). However, I have done a mock build and everything fits so it's all good.

A huge thanks to everyone replying to this for the very warm welcome that I have received, this is a great community to be a part of.

Hi George, welcome to the PBG family and wishing you luck with your build.

Hopefully the only sawing required is to shape the headstock and best hint there would be to trim to within about 3mm to 5mm of the traced outline and sand the rest of the way. It will take time and a bit of effort but better to sand down to a pre designated line rather than attempt to cut out on the line and stuff things up, which is quite easy to do with hand held tools.

Only other tips are to take your time and ask lots of questions on this forum as help will not be too far away.

A bit of a nooby question here for anyone reading, but is the ST-1M a bolt on or glue on neck? I'm not sure on how to differentiate the two.

Hi George

The ST style are all bolt on necks, you will have a plate and four screws that go through the body it the neck heel. All of the Fender-ish kits are like this. The LP and other Gibson-sequel style kits are set necks (Glued in necks) and most of the others are either/or. You can get an LP kit, with a bolt on neck (LP1-S, I think) but you can't get any of the fender shapes with set necks.
