Oil paint blends and feathers really well.
Dab small amounts of the oil paint around the inside edge of the burst and then work it out towards the edge with a decent brush, maybe a cm or 2 wide. Then apply more little blobs closer to the edge and keep working it outwards.
You could try keeping the brush very slightly (VERY slightly) moist with low odour turps or something similar if you need to but try without to start.
You're looking to create a "filter" effect with the oil paint and the strength of the colour of that filter is controlled by how much paint you blend on.
Build the effect up slowly and leave plenty of time for oil paint to dry.
it's so crazy it just might work! great idea

Dingotone is oil based as I remember.
Sorry Andy I didn’t get back to you sooner nah spray the dingo tone light coat with the orange just to darken it up the orange and fade it towards the yellow and reclear you don’t haft to rub a burst or a stain can spray them (I think burst look better when sprayed) when I did my apprenticeship i started in a furniture factory (Kirby’s) we very rarely rubbed a stain some woods can suck up stain like buggery I would suggest use a air brush or small touch up gun if you have one just set the gun up to spray a tad on the dry side.

I am looking for my next kit now Andy which I’m going to do a burst and stain and will be spraying it, I just cant make up my mind if I go with a les or es-3 or Ibanez or prs kit just cant make my mind up what to pull the trigger on, I don’t usually come to the forum very often so I don’t post much

Cheers for posting that time-lapse video Andy40, it was cool to see how the finishing work went, that thing you were using to hold the body at an angle while you worked on it looked like a really handy device, might have to buy myself one.

That guitar is looking great by the way.

Cheers mate, I wonder if my local big green shed has them in stock, since they do stock Irwin brand Stanley Knife blades.
