So as you can see on my first veneer top, these damn glue lines popped out when I applied the stain. Bugger.

I have plans to do an LP with a flame top and DON'T want this to happen again.

Any tips and tricks to stop this happened again without sanding through the veneer or scratching the hell out of the top?

    Any contributions are greatly appreciated.

Goo off is a product oft recommended. Never used it myself, but it is apparently the business.

I have actually found that sanding them is the way to go - but super carefully due to thinness of the cap ,as you know

A few people have posted that if you try goof off and it doesn't work, then use a wire brush to coarse up the veneer around the glue bits so that stain will take into the wood.

    Never tried it myself though.

Should work as it's the glue that's sealing the surface, so you need to break that seal. Again, dampening the wood after each cleaning attempt (better using metho or turps than water) should show up any areas that still require work. If the fluid can penetrate the wood under any remaining glue, then so will the stain.

Could be an issue with Dingo Tone though, best check with DB first

I would avoid using water to check for the dreaded glue spots, it may cause the veneer to bubble and that will cause bad language.
Best to wipe down with pure gum terpentine.

As for removing glue spots, goofoff works a treat from all accounts.

There is always a workaround for glitches, mistakes and other Guitar building gremlins.....

Thanks for the advice guys. Very helpful.

I was concerned about how to remove the glue without leaving the veneer vulnerable to bubbling or leaving a deep trough, but I guess that could be filled with Timbermate or something equivalent?

Goo Off (looking at the product description), should simply dissolve the glue, leaving no trough. Just need to be careful it doesn't penetrate too far and dissolve the glue holding the veneer on. So use in moderation. Multiple passes rather than one big one.

Yup. Moderation. Always moderation. Except for the n+1 rule where guitars are concerned.
