I've used blackwood for neck material and fingerboard. You could always glue wings on for the headstock of the neck. What are the dimensions of the blackwood piece ?
Hi Woks Id have to confirm but think its around 100x100mm.

    Hi Andy
Bought from Maleny, so close to Brisbane. (David Linton Furniture and Timber http://davidlinton.com.au/)
He has some guitar timber on his website but nothing in comparison to what he has at his mill a bit out of town.
Great guy too and passionate about timber. Spent a couple of hours there. Pricing is good too.

Hi Tony, 100 x 100 should be enough for maybe 2 necks, that is neck and fingerboard. How are you going to cut the block into smaller pieces ? Been a while since I did a scratchy so can't remember fingerboard and neck blank thicknesses off the top of my head. A rough guess a fingerboard blank would start about 8-10mm thick and neck blank think ends up being about 20mm thick at the heel so blank maybe 22-24mm thick. Any offcuts you can save for the headstock wings you will need to glue on.

Hi Wokks - fretboard will be different material either be some maccassar ebony or gidgee that I have.
Should be able to get three 30mm blanks and will get the block cut at a timber works as my bandsaw will struggle to maintain dead straight cut for the 100mm thickness.
Question was more about grain direction for which side should be the fretboard side of the blank so I can cut correctly for better strength.

ah nice one Tony the fingerboards sound awesome. Cool I would cut them the orientation you have in the photo with the upper side being top or bottom.

So for the luthiers, from my thinking the top face in the picture would be the top (fretboard) of a neck?
This thread has descended into blatant wood porn. Shame on you Tony.

    Woks The #10 is Mango.
tempates are from Potvin Guitars in Canada. thought I would start with some proper templates until I get out of the measure 100 times, freak out, leave for a day, measure twenty times , cut once cycle - will look at doing someting a bit different. Really good qual templates 1'2 " MDF
