Waz...I put some glad wrap over the neck of the spout and do the red cap up tight after each guitar. Whilst it is in use I just do up the red cap.

My one litre can is over 1 year old and has done four jobs and is fine.

Even with pretty OCD masking I got some bleed through and my stains mixed in a couple of places....blue and yellow....make green.

But on the necks and the body the poly...which does have a honey tone....has not made my blue colour too green at all. I would still recommend it over Tru Oil to not make a green colour....oh sanding sealer before the finish makes a difference too.

Thanks mate, good advice and will keep that in mind if I get around to doing another blue guitar as green may be another consideration. Just depends on available funds and which kit I pick.

I am so over finishing. Many many coats of wipe on poly have been lightly wiped on.....body and necks have hung for a month.

1500 grit wet sand and then the black coloured ...about 2400...micro mesh wet sand. No pressure on the paper or pad.....and blue colour everywhere....wow. I am at a loss.

The end grain has shiny and matt bits all over and the black stain is all good.

No issues on the edges....amazing.....but I have two spots where it looks like a strip of wood has just torn out. WTF.

Wipe off and walk away.....breathe breathe.

Tomorrow I think maybe 180 grit....timber mate....dry....Sunday 240 grit and fluffy damping. Then colour again.

Then more poly....and more poly..... hang and only waiting 7 days this time....had enough.

Then black micro mesh wet sand.....very carefully and see what I have.

    Oh.....insert big sigh. 😖

    I share your pain.

On the Swampy Tele I have been so close to finished on a couple of occasions only to just scrape through to bare timber in a couple of spots. If it happens again could be very tempted to go bananas and create a reliced version instead.

Basswood is not so forgiving if you need to do a re-stain touch up section and wish you luck in that regard.

This is why the clear coat spray gear appeals. Feel your pain...been watching your build. 😎

Multiple thin top coats are sometimes way thinner than what you realise and hence why so easy to wet sand through. I might just try and polish the latest touch ups this time and see if that does the trick.

Today I attacked the big girl....240 grit sandpaper over worn spots....and two join lines....one on the front of the body....the other on the rear.

Timber mate mixed in a little finger bowl and wiped along the join line.....hung out in the sun until dry.

Light sand with 240 all over.

Reapplied blue and black stains all over....hanging in a heated room.....aircon....24 degreees.

Wipe on Poly for this girl tomorrow.

How does the colour look this time? A bit more of an even spread?

The necks and the body now have been recoated with stain to a point I like. They have all now been coated twice with thin layers of wipe on polyurethane now. The repairs have disappeared into the surrounding colours....looks good to me. Waz...it is still what I was looking for....black over the top of everything and blue poking through in places on the body and the edges....faded look really....not blue...not black.

Casualities of re-masking the headstock face to prevent blue colour coming over.....has been the water decals have come free. How...they were under a number of coats of POLY?

Maybe as you said Waz...they are thinner than we think.

Well I have more laser decal paper and my colour laser printer sits waiting. I may have to work on this. How do I affix water slide decals and then cover them so they don't come loose again? In the past I have just put the decals on...and then made sure I put at least three coats of poly over the top. Maybe that is not enough.

Hi Ozzie, print the decal larger than headstock size with lots of clear background and trim it back once dry. You can then put plenty of coats over the top and it should stay put.
