It also depends on how you want the neck selection to work, and if the supplied switches are just the standard 3-way toggles or something special specific to this kit. Do you want the neck swithcing to be bass/off/guitar or bass/both/guitar (to allow you to drone one neck while playing the other)? The PBG diagram with stock switches would mean both necks are on in the middle position.

There are options that would allow you wire it with only two switches, but it depends on how you want the controls to work and how you want the neck switching to function etc. Decide on what you want to try to do and we can maybe work out a wa to do it.

    Hey there Weirdy,

I am thinking......have to save the money for the kit and two sets of Tone Riders.....that I would like to select each of the four pick ups, and I was looking at a mini toggle.....drilled hole in the control cavity that exists......with on/off/on.....wiring choices to select Bass or Guitar.

So basically wired as per the three page PBG diagram, just add a mini toggle into the control cavity to replace the third three way toggle switch.

But all the mini toggles I can find don't carry a ground. Will that matter?

Did some thread surfing.....and had a look at the website of feast Watson.

I wonder how their prooftint under Scandinavian oil would go on Basswood and maple necks?

Or the prooftint stain under spray can gloss acrylic.

I think the mahogany colour on the body with golden teak on the necks may be a nice combination.

A 4 pole double-neck toggle switch would give you the bass/off/guitar and allow you to run 2 volume 2 tone and the pickup select toggle for the active neck. Basically, LP style wiring for whichever neck is currently active. Downside is same pots are used for both necks so it would have to be all 500's or 250's and would also be a pain if you're frequently switching between necks.

A Dano style on/off/on full sized toggle would work well as your neck selector and fit nicely in the pre-drilled hole. But, if you wanted to use a mini-toggle you could use a washer style ground lug or even just shielding tape in the cavity should ground it (assuming there's enough thread on it to body mount it).

Another option would be to have 2 x 250K vols for the bass neck, wired in JB style, and then 2 x 500K as a master volume and tone. The pickup selector would only apply to the guitar neck (and you could have the master vol only apply to guitar too) and the bass vols would control the bass pup selection. Use an on/off/on neck selector and again you only need two toggles.
    Scott.

G'day Ozzbike, Dimarzio DPDT minis are the best in the business and here are a few links to look at where one of the 6 lugs gets wired to ground.

The other issue is amplification. Do you want the ouput going to a single mono jack, regardless of the selected neck, or separate the bass and guitar output with a stereo jack.

Good point about separate outputs. A stereo output jack into an external splitter cable would do the trick as that is what I use on my Ric 4003.

Hey Ozz, I did a lot of testing of the F & W prooftint on some scrap pine. It can be used with or without timbermate and Tru oil goes over fine so i imagine danish oil would be fine.

I can say though that I never ended up using it as I found the stains to be a bit lacklustre. I've got several bottles of the stuff if you want them just PM me your address and I'll try to send (not sure if im able as they are a spirit based stain?)

I also faced the same problem as you with my SGD-612 in that I didn't really have the $$ to drop on four pups. instead I pulled the PBG pups apart suck an alnico5 magnet in them and have wax potted them. If I ever get to finish the build i'll let you know how they sound.

Thanks for the ideas mate....and tales of past trials.

    1. I think this build might be awhile coming....Xmas bills are on the horizon.

    2. I think that maybe a full all natural build under spray acrylic or wipe on poly maybe a chance....the NUDE DUDE.

    3. This is a build for me....so the amp stuff not really an issue. Worst case a good A B pedal connected to my Bass Cube and Vox.

    4. I think the Di marzio mini toggle might be for me. I have heaps of full size gotoh 500 and 250 pots here. Will have to get a DM mini and see if it all fits.

May end up with Bourne minis I think....and sadly maybe the small green dots of death caps....but still two tone bleeds going in.

    5. 2 x TUSQ nuts. Tone rider Rock Song guitar pickups. Tone rider Jazz bass pickups. High mass adjustable bass bridge...GFS one looks same as kit one. Roller tune-o-magic bridge and higher quality tail piece.

    6. I play Bass okay and guitar badly....but I enjoy the challenges of getting a setup onto a neck....bridge and nut to where the action and intonation are golden.

This is my ultimate man shed dream this NUDE DUDE. 😀

Seeing as you are in the neighbourhood would love to see the finished project, just to size up how big it really is.
