Thread: Guitar rack idea

  1. #11
The rack's a great idea, but that's an intriguing guitar collection? The only one I can identify if the white Tele at the back of the bottom shelf.

I didn't click the link... are they his/her own builds or just rare purchases?
    Cheers,

    Adam

Hi Adam, the brand is Kauer and it looks like they are a US guitar builder where customers can specify various upgrades in the build. Prices are quite high end, just like their guitar rack too.

I've seen somewhat similar builds on instructables. Nothing that fancy, but might be worth looking into.
Thought of concern: Would an Explorer styled guitar work as easy? Due to the body I'd think not, but I don't have any experience with racks like these. I've been thinking of making one like that, certain PVC & padding (depending on the type of paint & finish on the guitar), or a briefcase version.

Neither Explorers, Firebirds or Flying Vs (or the bass equivalents) would sit well in that type of rack. They really need neck-hanging stands. Something like this (I've got one of these for my V) and will need another for my Explorer.

I think you can get the neck-hanging part separately and could build them into a DIY multi-stand/rack.

I always do love a DIY challenge. Maybe a stand/rack with 2-3 Explorer/V capable slots, and 2-3 standards.

I have been considering something similar myself lately, but this is a very, very nice example! Looks like I'll be getting the tools out...

    cheers,

Hi Raz, I use these cheapies for most of my guitars, including the explorers as the underneath supporting arm can swivel and is a better support than just the hanging type.

35 years ago when I had my 1st explorer I actually bought a cello stand that had the guitar hanging from it's headstock. Not so good as it was very upright and vertical and therefore easily knocked over. These ones have the guitar slightly angled back and much better.

Finally got to build a guitar rack!
With the SG approaching completion (soon... maybe), I didn't have any stand left, so I started thinking about building a first try.
I didn't want to spend much on this at all, so I recycled a 2.4m long pine shelf that I recovered when I demolished the old kitchen.
I designed the rack to use the shelf as optimally as possible, which gives me a 1m long rack with room for 9 guitars.
Still need to varnish it, then stick foam (the only parts I bought for this project) on the bits where the guitars will rest, but pretty happy with the result!

I keep wanting to do one of these, never find the time. Not sure i want to concentrate all the weaponry in one locale though as it might prompt the "why do you need so many guitars?" line of inquiry.

Hand crafting guitars, because Death Rays are expensive.
