It rules out my refurbed fret less bass too not that it was as high a standard as the J Bass already entered.

we shall see... hopefully either a category for major refubs / resto of branded guitars or a separate comp... stay tuned

some awesome CBG style offerings so far, both are amazing, and love the PBass scratchie, very nice work

    Hi Zandit,

I’ve added restorations, refurbs and refinished guitars to this GOTY Comp.

    Thanks Stan for the input.

I’ve decided not to put a long list of conditions on entry… I think the judges will be able to recognise when someone has replaced a bit of hardware/pickups and when they have completely rebuilt and refinished a guitar or bass. So it will be self-regulating and judged appropriately.

I guess we'll need some sort of prize if we get a few entries.
    Cheers,

    Adam

Now we've resolved this, I'll remove these comments discussing the Refurbish idea in a day or two, just to clean up this thread.
    Cheers,

My First Build, Please Be Gentle

Well, I had hoped this would be a Pitbull Build, but the Tele Deluxe Kit was back ordered when I had the means to purchase it, so I kind of had to order what I could. I ended up getting a kit from a company here, in the US called Seismic Audio. They mainly deal in sound equipment, but they had a few kits as well. They only sold this kit in basswood, which I was worried about, because I wanted to go,with a natural walnut finish, but I worked hard on it, busted my butt, and I think it came out GREAT. My friends have told me that if they hadn't witnessed the stages of the build, they would have thought I was lying about building it. I had some Fender wide range humbuckers lying around, so I added those, upgraded the tuners, and put on some black strap locks. I apologize that the only shot of the back that I have is from when It was hanging outside while the clearcoat was dryingThis is my first, of what I figure will be many builds.

An older refurb....again, please be gentle!

Well, as I read through all of the rules for this little competition, I realized I had another eligible entry. This is my 1968 Univox Custom. I've always had a thing for 60's and 70's Japanese Guitars, and I found this treasure on EBay in approximately 2003. I think I paid about 70 bucks for it. It had no-name Zebra humbuckers in it, the original Tremelo Tailpiece was gone, and it had been painted bright yellow with a brush and latex exterior house paint. I was kind of disgusted when I removed the latex paint, and found a beautiful, yet mostly sanded off sunburst finish. However, since that finish was cooked, I went to a local auto paint supplier and had them mix me up a nice pearl white. I rewired the guts, and stuck in a couple of pickups out of a late nineties Epiphone Les Paul, and a Grestch tailpiece I had lying around. I also replaced the 3 way blade switch (like what you would find in a telecaster) with a 3 way toggle out of the same Les Paul that the pickups had come out of. The univox head badge was long gone when I got the guitar, and I'm always keeping my eyes open for a replacement. I think the guitar came out really well, but the back is dented as if it had been in a hailstorm! I was in my early twenties when I took on this project, and using wood filler or body filler to smooth the back never even crossed my mind. Hindsight is always 20/20 as they say. I included a photo of what the guitar would have looked like new. Being an older refurb, math at I don't have a case for, it has taken on a few dings over the years when moving, etc.

Thank you very much, Stan. The Tele plays amazingly, and not to brag, or sound pompous...I think my finish looks better than anything I've seen from fender in a while. I'm very very pleased with how it came out.
The Univox on the other hand...doesn't play great...isn't the best finish...isn't the best sounding guitar...but it holds a special place in my heart because my dad, who passed away 6 years ago guided me through mixing and thinning the paint and using the spray gun. He painted cars in his spare time...something he picked up later in life, just because he enjoyed doing it...and that Univox is a project we kind of did together, where he thought me to use a pro spray gun, etc. it'll hang on my wall next to his old Silvertone acoustic as long as I can help it!
