Thread: Zandit's First Build Thread

I achieved the green on my lp1s with this:

It's your basic every day hobby grade acrylic art paint to be found in arts en crafts stores the empty square by my thumb indicates that it's transparent. I mixed it with some water to make it easier to spread with a cloth. Obiously you would need a slightly different tint of green your example is more olive. The nice thing is it holds its colour when you water it down to make it easier to work with so what you buy is what you get. Or if you don't find your taste they are mixable.

This stuff is easy to apply and dries VERY quickly. I'm not saying it's the only way to go but definitely worth considering for your test runs.

I first tried a green stamp ink that didn't do the trick at all. The water based stamp inks will get you darker results than what you're going for.

If you go with tru oil take your time between coats and less is definitely more dont be tempted to slop on too much at once even though it looks great while you're doing it it cures worse than when you slowly build up very thin layers of the stuff. And make sure to work on a clean dust free environment any hair, dust or other unwanted crap will easily get stuck in the finish at this point.
We have 2 cats with long fine hair and one of them is white trust me it was a struggle, at some point i considered getting a space ship type air lock at the entrance to the workshop lol.

Also beware of cheap steel wool it falls apart into tiny fibres that end up everywhere by the time your done having a brush and vacuum cleaner handy near your workstation definitely helps.

    Good luck.

I echo the sentiment on Cheap stainless steel wool. That Sh*t set me back weeks in my build.

Thanks Guys, most appreciated for all your comments. I'm still toying with what I'm going to do with the top colour. I've been in contact with DB, and he is expecting a more vibrant green later this week. We'll see how that turns out.
Thanks also Andy for the link to that site. I've seen a couple of builds that have used that colour, and it has come out a treat. I was going to get around to searching for it, but you've saved me the hassle!
In the mean time, the Kit was ordered last week. Hopefully it will arrive mid to late this week down here in lil ole Tassie.
I'll be using the black stain I showed pictures of last week for the back. I'm thinking I will leave the neck natural with just a top coat on it.
I have just bought a range of W&D paper ranging from 180-800 from the big green shed, and I also have some 0000 steel wool from there that I bought last year for detailing my acoustic guitar fret boards. I've kept it in an air tight ziplock bag so hopefully that will still be good to use.
Thanks again everyone. I'll keep you updated!

Whoops! Better hope DB isn't monitoring this thread, you've committed 2 Naughty Warehouse infractions, Visiting the BGSFOS and buying sandpaper from the BGSFOS.

Haha, can I escape punishment by just being a Tasmanian?? Surely I can use that as a defense!!!

I don't mean any disrespect against the sponsors of the site, but if this is usable, I'm not going to waste it.
Thanks in advance for any comments.
Zandit - Adam (owner of the site) has no problems with whatever you want to use to finish a guitar (and in the deep dark pits of youtube, you may find some dodgy videos of Adam doing a spray job on a kit to prove it) - Pitbull sells Dingotone which was created as a guitar stain / finish. Follow the site and there will be some comment on what DB likes and doesn't like - the beauty of this site is that it caters for people from the beginning end of a guitarbuilding experience through to old hands like DB - who makes money from selling premium scratch built guitars and has to stand by his product for years to come. Many, many guitar enthusiasts have used household stains and the like, including stamp pad ink, etc. to mixed success - but really it's your guitar and whatever you want to finish it with is cool by us.

Hey buddy, I copied these links in on one of your other threads as this colour fountain pen ink might just do the trick. Wouldn't hurt to mix in a small amount of yellow ink jet cartridge ink too in case it is a bit dark. Big CAUTION with inks......the colour can bleed and it is easy to wipe most off over a large area with a damp rag even 24 hours after initial application.

Thanks Waz, I was looking at fountain pen ink the other day. I was in Spotlight the same day, and spotted tie-dye ink as well. I'm not sure how workable that would be.
My kit has been shipped, but due to the distances between WA and Tassie, I won't see it till next week. Hopefully I get a good looking veneer on top.
