    ST-1M Travel Guitar

Not really a build thread as I didn't take a lot of pics along the way but I thought some might be interested. I work FIFO and motel rooms at site. The lockers provided are only 900mm deep. Ive been squeezing a short scale Harmony Bobkat into the locker but being a 1961 guitar in an original cardboard case its not surviving too well. I liked the idea of the pickguard strats so this is my own take on that theme. Total length is 890mm, could've done 3 a side tuners and saved a bit more but I like this headstock shape.

Balance is a little headstock heavy ( measured @ approx 300g to lift it back up? ) but with a wide leather strap it sort of holds in place, I will mostly be playing sitting down anyway. Its the standard tremolo bridge that comes with the kit:-

I might try getting a better bridge which may help with the balance as well. After buying the router bits, clear nitro, waterslide paper and a bag to put it in it'll have cost me around $320. But nothing is better than having modified and assembled it yourself.

Definitely not a contest winner but I'm loving the weight of the guitar (2.2 kg) compared to a full bodied Greco strat (3.75 kg). Replaced the nut with bone yesterday, a standard strat nut is not tall enough for these so I reshaped a les paul one for the job. I managed to widen the string spacing by 3mm overall and have no problems with strings slipping off the side of the fretboard.

Although this guitar sounds okay, when compared to another with Toneriders the next mod will be pickups and electronics. Just need to find some cash!

Also had an issue with the input socket crackling, don't forget to file and solder the earth tab to the socket. Even the expensive ones benefit from this.
