    You could perhaps try a clear pickguard (buy or make), and then add your checkered pattern to the back of it, using paint or contact or whatever. That way your checkerboard would be protected from scratching/chipping/wear and it would perhaps add some depth to the effect... just a thought. Or, maybe you could try using some black automotive style vinyl spray paint (used on plastics and car interiors) on a white pickguard?

    Leather could certainly be an interesting idea. I have often wondered if you could Tatoo Leather, If so it would present some interesting scenarios....

    So I googled it and, yes you can. Maybe not for pickguards, but some interesting Strap ideas come to mind......

    I've tried a few dye cut vinyl's lately over my stock guards as I couldn't find an affordable custom pickguard. They seem to hold well and saved me from cutting a whole new guard from PVC sheets.
