Looks like they were built in the same way Alembic Basses were back then
Lots of guitars and bases being built in the late '70s to very early '80s with that form of construction, mainly Japanese. Ibanez, Aria, Vantage, Washburn & Westone - to name but I few that I know of. Not all had a natural finish. Probably copying the Alembic style initially as Tweaky said, though there may may been others apart from Alembic doing it, though Alembic were certainly the best known.

A very interesting read DB. I was right about the DiMarzios - though the tapped (3-wire) Dual Sounds rather than pure Super Distortions.
