Howdy all, here's my entry for Rocktober GOTM. It's been a huge learning curve and a lesson in patience. After initially stuffing up the set neck, I managed to steam it apart and put it back together...
Well she's finally done. Upgraded the nut, bridge and electronics, as well as a handwound pickup from Leddin Vintage Guitars. Had to widen the pickup route to fit the beast of a pickup, sounds...
Ended up trying a burst around the edges. A little large but I'm liking it better.
Not sure if I'm digging the two tone colour on the junior. Traditionally of course all the one colour. Looks a bit weird without binding to separate the two colours. Might paint the top black.
Yeah, I prefer candy apple red which I should have bought instead.
After I painted her I could see the grain was not quite filled enough. So I applied some ebony timbermate over the top of the red...
Wood dye has been applied. Black Japan. Then some wipe on poly over the top.
Mmmm... I wish I could but Big Mike trying to be little mike 😝
Put on a few coats of Fender fiesta red nitro. Going to do a black dye on the back and neck.
Nitro sanding sealer applied 2 coats
Mahogany timbermate applied ready for sanding. First time using this stuff, goes on easy 👍
Cheers guys. Yeah the gaps on the neck pocket let me get the paint scraper in there easy too. Lucky save
Yep wrap around compensated bridge, I may look for an upgraded one though.
Glued her back together, this time with the e strings attached. This is as even as I could get it. Strings still look a little too far from the edge for mine, but they are even compared too each...
Or maybe just plain stoopid 😝
Lesson learnt. String up the e strings BEFORE you glue the neck, not AFTER. Luckily she prised apart with a bit of steam and a paint scraper.
What's cooking?? :o
Sprayed 4 coats of nitro Fiesta Red. Thinking I might do the fender custom shop relic thing where they do white over red and then expose the red. I have a can of Olympic White so might give it a go....
Thanks guys. Finished sanding with 1200. Gave her 3 coats of nitro sanding sealer clear from a spray can. Glad I had a good mask on cause this stuff really is potent! Will leave it overnight before...
Well here is the final result. Used the mouse sander to tidy it up, and then by hand with the 240, 600 & 1200. I took a little too much off the top of the ball end but pretty happy.
Cheers thanks. I think I will leave it alone, I agree it looks fine, I'm happy to have got that far without stuffing anything up :p
So I took a weeks leave to do some painting around the house. Well you got to do something waiting for the coats to dry right? It's going to need a fair bit of sanding. I wasn't game to cut the bit...
Hi guys
None of the links to videos and forum topics in the 'How to build your pit bull guitar' seem to be working?
Cheers
Err umm, yes, Bundy Rum, I haven't touched the stuff since that party in 1985 :p, great towel though!
My Jazz Bass is a Squire Vintage Modified '77 with a Fender Modern Player neck and a Baddass...
Traced the headstock from my jazz bass onto the back of the neck. Might have a look online for a template as well.
Neck fits nice and tight. The bridge holes where already drilled. I placed the bridge over the holes and measured from the nut to the G string saddle was exactly 34 inches.
